Want to Go Faster? Stop Trying to Go Faster.

The Fastest Drivers Know When Not to Accelerate.

Anyone can floor it. Here’s how to actually go faster.

When you want to go faster in a go-kart, the instinct is pretty simple: press the accelerator harder and keep it there.

Makes sense. More throttle, more speed. Except that’s not quite how a fast lap works.

The fastest drivers aren’t necessarily the ones who spend every possible second with their foot planted. They’re the ones who put the kart in the right position to get back to full throttle earlier and stay there longer. And that changes the way you approach almost every corner.

Full throttle doesn’t mean faster everywhere

Keeping the accelerator fully pressed might feel quick, especially when you’re carrying plenty of speed into a corner. But speed going into a corner is only half the story. What matters just as much, or often more, is how quickly you can get out of it.

Enter too fast, and you’ll find yourself fighting the kart through the turn. You’ll need more steering, you’ll struggle to accelerate cleanly, and you may lose the speed you thought you gained on entry.

So instead of asking, “Where can I press the throttle harder?”, start thinking:

“How can I get the kart ready for full throttle sooner?”

That’s where the real speed is.

And this is one of the biggest differences between simply driving a kart and understanding kart racing. Speed is not just about the accelerator. It’s about managing momentum from one part of the lap to the next.

Brake before you turn

A fast corner often begins with slowing down at the right time. Get most of your braking done before you start turning. This gives you a more controlled entry and lets the kart settle before you ask it to change direction.

Carry too much speed into the corner, and you’ll spend the rest of it correcting your mistake. Brake properly beforehand and you can focus on getting the kart turned, straightened and accelerating again.

In other words, sometimes slowing down sooner helps you speed up sooner.

The important part is understanding that braking and acceleration are connected. If you use the braking zone well, you create a better opportunity to accelerate through the rest of the corner. A poor braking decision can affect everything that follows.

Point the kart where you want to go

As you move through the corner, your goal is to start opening up the steering and pointing the kart towards the exit.

Why?

Because the straighter the kart becomes, the more confidently you can accelerate. Trying to go full throttle while the steering is still wound up tightly asks the kart to do too much at once. Instead, focus on getting the turn done and progressively reducing the steering angle as you approach the exit. Once the kart is pointing down the track, that’s your cue to unleash the power.

Think about what the kart needs to do next rather than only reacting to where it is right now. If the next part of the track is a long straight, a clean exit becomes even more important.

Don’t treat the accelerator like an ON/OFF switch

There’s a lot of space between zero throttle and full throttle.

Use it.

As you begin exiting the corner, start with partial throttle. Then feed in more as the kart straightens. When the kart is ready, go all the way.

Think of it as a progression: Turn. Straighten. Build. Full throttle.

The smoother you make that transition, the easier it becomes to carry acceleration out of the corner instead of constantly correcting the kart.

It also makes your driving more consistent. Instead of having one lap where you nail the exit and another where you run wide, you start developing a repeatable technique. That matters when you are trying to improve lap after lap on a go karting track.

Your racing line decides how early you can accelerate

go karting track

The racing line isn’t just about taking the shortest or prettiest route through a corner. It’s about putting the kart in the best position for what comes next. A good line gives you room to rotate the kart, reach the right apex and open up your steering earlier on exit. And that creates a useful chain reaction:

Better line → straighter kart → earlier throttle → more acceleration.

This is also why your apex matters. Hitting an apex that sets up a clean exit can be more valuable than diving aggressively into the corner and compromising everything that follows.

Don’t just think about how you enter a corner. Think about where you want the kart to be when you leave it.

The best go karts racing experience is not necessarily about attacking every corner. It is about understanding where you can push and where you need to be patient.

Once you’re straight, commit

You’ve done the braking. You’ve made the turn. The kart is straight.

Now go.

Once you’re on the straight, use full throttle and avoid lifting unnecessarily. Every unnecessary lift gives away momentum you worked to build through the previous corner.

At the same time, keep your eyes up.

The straight isn’t a break between corners. It’s your chance to accelerate while already preparing for the next braking zone.

The faster you get, the further ahead you need to think.

This is where good laps start to feel different. You are no longer reacting to every corner at the last second. You already know where you want the kart to go, where you need to brake and where you want to be when the next corner begins.

The mistakes that feel fast, but aren’t

One of the tricky things about karting is that a lap can feel incredibly fast without actually being fast. Charging into every corner at maximum speed feels dramatic. Going full throttle early feels aggressive. Adding more steering when the kart won’t turn feels like you’re pushing harder. But the stopwatch may disagree.

Some of the most common ways drivers lose time are going full throttle too early, entering corners too quickly, accelerating while using too much steering, lifting when they don’t need to, and focusing entirely on corner entry instead of setting up the exit. A clean lap can sometimes feel less frantic than a messy one. That doesn’t make it slower.

Another mistake is trying to copy what a faster driver does without understanding why they do it. A racing line, braking point or throttle application only works when it matches the corner and the kart. The goal is not to imitate movement. It is to understand the reason behind it.

Try this on your next session

Don’t try to fix your entire lap at once. Pick one corner.

Instead of trying to enter it as fast as possible, focus on getting your braking done early enough to control the kart. Get it rotated, start straightening it sooner and see if you can return to full throttle earlier than you did on the previous lap.

Then look at your lap time. Not how fast it felt. How fast it actually was. Once you get that corner right, move on to the next one.

You can use the same approach whether you are learning kart racing for the first time or trying to improve your pace at a go karting track. Focus on one corner, one braking point and one exit at a time.

Because getting quicker isn’t always about being more aggressive; it’s about becoming more deliberate.

And the next time you find yourself wondering, “Where can I press the accelerator harder?”

Ask a better question:

“How can I get the kart ready for full throttle sooner?”

That’s where your next faster lap begins.
